Call a Tech ASAP for These 3 Furnace Issues

Sometimes, it’s tough to tell if that issue you’re having with your heating system is truly urgent—or if you can wait a while to schedule service.

We know that you’re a busy homeowner and that it can be difficult to find the time of day to schedule in home services. But we want you to know that even those little issues that seem like no big deal can indicate a pretty big problem. Here are 3 types of issues we always recommend calling in a technician for—as soon as possible.

1. The Heat Keeps Turning Off

This one’s tricky. It is possible that a heating system that keeps turning on and off just has a dirty filter, preventing airflow from moving into the system. You should try replacing the filter first, and see if this solves the problem.

Otherwise, you must call in a heating technician. The problem could be…

  • Something blocking the vent, a major safety issue.
  • A troublesome flame sensor, which is a fairly inexpensive replacement but can become unsafe.
  • An oversized or undersized furnace, which may, unfortunately, need replacement.

2. Low Temperatures

Of course, you should check on the thermostat first and make sure it’s in heating mode and set to the proper temperature. The thermostat could be broken, but this is actually rarely the case.

Chances are that one of the many other components of the furnace are causing the problem. You need to call in an expert technician to clean and adjust the burners and make sure there are no safety issues.

3. Loud Noises

Don’t just deal with the noise and resolve to call technicians later. Contact a local specialist as soon as possible, so that you can get back to normal and so that the issue doesn’t get any worse. A grinding noise, for example, could just mean a blower belt needs replacement, and that’s an easy fix for a technician. But wait for long, and the belt may wear out, causing the fan to stop working and your heater to break right when you need it the most.
